Yakou (
Appearance[]
Yakou holds herself up elegantly, hiding her mouth with a folding fan. This is to hide her teeth, which have decayed and turned black. She shares her father and Lishu's trait of having one less front tooth.[1]
Personality[]
Yakou is a social climber, jumping at every opportunity to get close to people of similar or higher rank, including Maomao and the imperial brother. She holds a high opinion of herself, and acts very condescendingly toward others, and is especially hostile toward Lishu. During the lion attack, Yakou virtue signaled by acting concerned for her father's light injury.[1]
Background[]
Yakou is the daughter of Uryuu and his concubine. She and her younger half-sister Lishu were sent to the western capital by their father to attend a banquet in honor of the imperial brother.
When Lishu arrived, Yakou yelled and slapped her, envious that she would likely become married to the imperial brother.[2] During the banquet, Yakou sat with her father, hoping to be introduced to the imperial brother. She later came by Maomao's room to introduce herself, though she was more interested in Maomao's hair stick.[3]
A few days prior to the banquet, Yakou was given some musk perfume by a local merchant, and gave it to a servant to splash on Lishu during the banquet as a prank.[4] Instead, it caused a lion brought as entertainment to target Lishu. When the lion was subdued by Basen, Yakou vowed revenge against him for causing a scratch on her father's face, to an unimpressed Jinshi.[1]

- Her name means 'moonlight'.
- In the web novel, Yakou is named and is an avid follower of the White Lady. This is in contrast to the light novel, where she is unnamed and has no relation to the White Lady.
