Xiaolan (
Appearance[]
Xiaolan is a young woman with brown or hazel eyes and long brown hair that she braids into buns. She wears simple servant-class clothes, which comprise of an inner robe and an outer shirt. In the anime and manga, her hair is shown as brown, but shown as near black or dark brown in light novel color illustration and Notebook manga.
Personality[]
Despite being a child that got sold off by her parents, Xiaolan has a positive attitude and remains grateful that she has a place to stay and food to eat. She is very well-versed in Inner Court gossip and shares it with Maomao with excitement and enthusiasm.
Abilities[]
Gossip: Being a low profile servant, Xiaolan is able to pick up on information and rumors that go around the Inner Court; she often shares her information with Maomao, who then uses it to solve mysteries.
Background[]
As a child, Xiaolan was sold by her parents, who were farmers, to become a servant within the Inner Court.[3] There, she met and became friends with Maomao. Xiaolan informed Maomao of the sickness afflicting Lihua, her son, and Gyokuyou's daughter, eventually leading to Maomao becoming one of Gyokuyou's ladies-in-waiting. Following the garden party, Xiaolan told Maomao how gifted hair sticks could be used to temporarily leave the Inner Court.[3]
Gaoshun later brought Xiaolan to help Maomao grow roses for an upcoming garden party, due to her leg injury.[4]
When books started circulating within the Inner Court, Xiaolan was determined to learn how to read and write so she could find work after her term ended, starting by asking Maomao.[5] She soon became one of the first students at Jinshi's school.
When her term in the Inner Court was nearing its end, Xiaolan began working at the bathhouse as an attendant to make connections with consorts.[6] After running into a cart, she helped Maomao in making ice cream for Consort Loulan.[7] At the end of her term, Xiaolan earned a letter of recommendation from a low consort, becoming a servant in the house of the consort's sister.[1]
