Taomei (桃美 (タオメイ) , Taomei^?) is the wife of Gaoshun and the mother of Maamei, Baryou, and Basen. She was a wet nurse to the Imperial family, and now serves as a lady-in-waiting to Jinshi. She is a minor character in The Apothecary Diaries.

Appearance

Maomao describes Taomei's face as "stern but quite beautiful". She is blind in the right eye from an earlier injury, resulting in two differently colored eyes.

Personality

As a "masterpiece of a woman", Taomei is considered to be scary and terrifying by her husband and both of her sons, who often compared to a predatory animal. She readily trades quips with her daughter, daughter-in-law and Suiren.

Abilities

Diligence: Taomei is very competent as one of Jinshi's assistants.

Background

Taomei was previously engaged to the former Ma clan heir, but when he was disowned, she married Gaoshun instead when she was 22 and he was 16. They began having children one year later.

Taomei works as the de facto Ma clan head, being responsible for running its day-to-day operations, and is training her daughter Maamei to succeed her role, due to Ma men being liable to die at any time. Both look after Baryou and Chue's child together as well.

Taomei served as Jinshi's nursemaid and is currently one of his ladies-in-waiting. She joined him on the trip to the Western Capital as part of his retinue. After Kulumu was caught trying to retrieve her owl, Taomei helped Maomao interrogate her on the Windreaders' history and use of birds, to success.

When Basen was openly angered by Gyoku-ou's treatment of Jinshi, Taomei slapped him and denounced his lack of respect for Gyoku-ou, though she shared his opinion.

Trivia

• Basen's duck, Jofu, is scared of her.
• At the Western Capital, Taomei launched Gaoshun into a pool.
