Sotei (素貞, Sotei^?), known as "The White Lady" (白娘娘, Pai-niangniang^?) or "The White Immortal", was Ayla's agent. She was meant to become the next Shrine Maiden of Shaoh. However, she never got her chance as the previous shrine maiden failed to give up her position. Sotei has been involved in several plots causing her to be an antagonist in The Apothecary Diaries.

Appearance

Sotei is a young albino woman and has very pale skin that allows her veins to be seen through it. She has long, flowing white hair that she wears let out and possesses red eyes. While performing onstage, Sotei wore a white dress with frills and garnet-colored accents.

Personality

Sotei is very deceptive, initially being gentle and patient with Lishu, before showing disgust when they met face-to-face. She often uses information gained from pigeons to fake empathy and induce conflict.

Abilities

Magic: Sotei is skilled at performing magic tricks, which many of her audience believed to be "immortal arts".

Background

Sotei was born in the shrine maidens' village in Shaoh. She was due to become the next Shrine Maiden of Shaoh, but as the current shrine maiden wanted to stay on longer, Sotei was sent back to the village to be raised in secret. Five years before the shrine maiden came to Li, Sotei was found by Ayla to be used in her plan to depose the shrine maiden.

Sotei initially traveled east from Shaoh to Li on with a caravan of entertainers and merchants. En route, they passed out opium to bandits and local guides. Arriving at the Royal Capital, Sotei began performing in smaller venues, but eventually moved on to the Argent Theatre, the most prestigious performance hall. She drew attention for her "immortal arts", which led to a drop in customers at the Verdigris House. Maomao, Lahan, and Rikuson attended one of her performances, with Maomao acting as an assistant in an act. Several days later, Sotei left the Royal Capital, nowhere to be found.

With Maomao's discovery that Sotei used pigeons as an information network, one of the men who received the messages was caught, leading to her arrest. Sotei was then confined in a tower in a room above Lishu, also confined under suspicion of infidelity. Using a sweet- and bitter-smelling perfume, Sotei manipulated Lishu into trusting her and distrusting her head lady-in-waiting through conversations. Once Lishu's room was empty, Sotei convinced her to leave the room and come upstairs. Lishu soon met Sotei in her room, who first pitied her condition, then scorned it as her problem.

Having scared Lishu into running to the top of the tower, Sotei followed her, and laughed to terrify her even further while Jinshi and Maomao tried to get her away from the unstable balcony. Though Lishu fell from the tower, she was rescued by Basen.

Trivia

• Sotei possesses poor eyesight and sensitive hearing, which are both common symptoms of albinism. The poor eyesight is caused by a lack of melanin, which is crucial for the eyes to function properly.
• Her name references the main character of the Legend of the White Snake.
