Shisui (子翠, Shisui?) is a maidservant in the Inner Palace, and a friend to Maomao and Xiaolan. She is a secondary character in The Apothecary Diaries.
Appearance[]

Shisui's anime design
Shisui is a fair skinned young woman of average height and build, with dark plum hair styled into two curly pigtails accompanied with two chin length strands framing both sides of her face. She also has big and dark-golden eyes.
She is most commonly seen wearing a laundry maidservant outfit.
Personality[]
Shisui is presented as a chatty, innocent, and free-spirited young woman with a penchant for collecting insects of all kinds as a hobby.
Like Maomao, who possesses extensive knowledge to poisons and medicine, Shisui is remarkably proficient with her expertise in insects and will otherwise spend hours talking about them.
Abilities[]
Entomology: Shisui loves insects a lot and possesses near-encyclopedic knowledge about them. Her knowledge has been used on multiple occasions, including gathering moths for the moon fairy dance, and predicting the coming locust swarms.
Background[]
When Maomao, Hongniang, and Princess Lingli chased after a cat that appeared in the rear palace, Shisui caught the cat and gave it to Maomao, before leaving the scene.[6]
On the last day of the caravan, Shisui requested to buy a jasmine tea bud at the same time as Maomao, who recognized her. Xiaolan then joined them at the shop, having known Shisui from work. The three girls later convened at the medical office, where they enjoyed jasmine tea and snacks from the quack doctor. Shisui brought up news of a strange smell coming from the northern quarter of the rear palace and showed everyone her drawings of insects from there. She bonded with Maomao over their shared interest of insects, despite Xiaolan and the quack's disgust.[7]
When Maomao scouted the location of an upcoming banquet in the northern quarter, she ran into Shisui collecting insects in cages. Shisui explained to her the physiology of moths, and later helped collect female moths to be used in the moon fairy's performance.[8]
During another outing in the northern quarter to search for Shisui, Maomao found her trying to collect crickets, and had a cricket squished on her head when Shisui tried to catch one. Engrossed, Shisui spent 30 minutes lecturing Maomao on crickets, until they noticed the Empress Dowager and her retinue going in the direction of the clinic. While they hid behind a pillar, Shisui revealed that it was the Empress Dowager who started the clinic. Shisui then decided to return to work, warning Maomao to do the same.[9]
Shisui participated in the annual scary storytelling meeting, where she sat next to Maomao. She shared a story from a country to the east, about a monk staying for a night in the house of a young couple. After the meeting ended, Shisui joined Maomao and Yinghua on the way back, and asked Maomao about the explanation behind the story of forbidden forest, before leaving.[10]
Trivia[]
- Shisui's name originally belonged to → [Suirei, but Shenmei disapproved of her carrying the Shi clan character. As a result, Shenmei stripped Suirei of the name and gave it to someone else.[11]]
