Shenlü (
Appearance[]
Shenlü is a middle-aged woman with green eyes, likely from foreign ancestry. Jinshi notes that her face conveys strength.[2]
Personality[]
Shenlü holds deep resentment for the imperial family, which started when she and her peers were taken as bedmates by the Former Emperor against their will, and were not allowed to leave. Despite her fury, she remains calm and collected, and acts furtively and indirectly to harm consorts. While her schemes may endanger innocent palace ladies, she sometimes goes out of her way to take care of them, possibly out empathy and guilt.
Abilities[]
Medical Knowledge: Though not allowed access to medicines, Shenlü's knowledge of how to heal common ailments far outstrips the quack doctor's.
Background[]
When Shenlü was 10 years old,[3] she was brought to the Inner Court. Like many girls around her age, she was sexually assaulted by the Former Emperor. Due to her low status, Shenlü could not be given away in marriage, and was thus not allowed to leave the Inner Court, even after her term was up. She and her peers, incluiding her friend Taihou, stayed on at the unofficial clinic for palace ladies, which was established by Empress Anshi to house the former bedmates of the Former Emperor.
When Ailan fell ill, she and Maomao visited the clinic for treatment. Shenlü gave Ailan a room to stay for the night. The next day, Shenlü asked Maomao to look after a servant of the Crystal Pavillion.[4]
As part of Shenlü's enmity against the imperial family, Maomao speculated that she contributed to the toxic face powder continuing to circulate within the rear palace which contributed to the death of three infant children of the Emperor, as well as the perfumes Shin used as abortifacients.[3]
Shenlü worked alongside Suirei - Taihou's granddaughter - to hide Maomao's kidnapping, by preventing Maomao's escape and keeping watch while Suirei opened an exit out of the Inner Court. She was later discovered by Jinshi sitting in front of Taihou's grave, smelling of alcohol. When Jinshi tried to interrogate her on Maomao's whereabouts, Shenlü was reminded of the Former Emperor, which distracted Jinshi enough for her to drink an entire bottle of alcohol.[5] Though Shenlü fell unconscious, she survived and was arrested.

- Her name, "Shenlü", means "deep green".
