Maomao was being consulted by Xiaolan, whose term of service in the harem was soon to end, about her next job. Suddenly, Shisui, who had been listening to the conversation, invited her to the baths to make some connections. In the large bathhouse used not only by maids but also by lower- and middle-ranking concubines, Xiaolan began to look for job connections by providing "a certain service" to the concubines. Then, from the concubines who had relaxed in the bathroom, she heard rumors of the higher-ranking concubines being pregnant and of the beautiful new eunuch...
