"The Late Emperor" is the 33rd overall episode and the 9th episode of the second season of The Apothecary Diaries anime adaptation.

Maomao's investigation of the "curse" reveals more about the late emperor than anticipated.

During the investigation of the "curse" requested by Empress Dowager Anshi, Maomao is staying at Jinshi's mansion for the first time in a long time. While listening to Suiren's story about Jinshi's childhood in her room, Maomao finds a mysteriously colored pebble in the suitcase containing Jinshi's favorite toy. It is a clue to solving the mystery of the "curse" that the Empress Dowager placed on the former emperor - the former emperor's corpse looking the same as when he was alive. Maomao visits the former emperor's room with the Empress Dowager, Jinshi, and others to uncover the secrets of the late emperor and the true nature of the curse.
