"The Shrine of Choosing" is the 31st overall episode and the 7th episode of the second season of The Apothecary Diaries anime adaptation.

Maomao directs her curiosity towards an old, oddly-shaped building.

Accompanying Xiaolan to her calligraphy school, Maomao visits her instructor, an old eunuch. When she becomes interested in an old shrine visible from the window of the room, the old eunuch says, "Those who rule this land must pass through that shrine. And only those who choose the right path will become the ruler of this land." At that time, Maomao, who was testing poison for Empress Gyokuyou and the Emperor as usual, is suddenly ordered by the Emperor to follow him. She meets Jinshi, who was also called, and heads to the old shrine that Maomao saw - the "shrine of choosing."
