The Apothecary Diaries Wiki

"Wheat Stalks" is the 8th episode of the The Apothecary Diaries anime adaptation.

Maomao's peaceful morning at home is interrupted when she's called in to investigate an apparent double suicide at one of the local brothels.

Translated blurb from official anime website...

The day after staying at her parents' house for the first time in a long time, Maomao is taken to a brothel by a flustered man who came to call an apothecary. There, she finds a prostitute and a man who have taken poison collapsed. Maomao encounters incidents wherever she goes, but she quickly saves the two and works with Luomen to treat them. After the two regain consciousness, Maomao leaves the brothel, but something feels strange about the story she heard from the prostitutes and the method of the double suicide, and she deduces the truth.[1]

Changes[]

  • During the resuscitation scene, the poisoned client getting revived by Maomao was omitted out of the scene in episode 8, but is shown in chapter 11 of the manga where she chest-pumps the rest of the poison out of him (episode 8 instead cuts to Maomao gargling and rinsing her mouth with water). While in the manga, the poisoned courtesan getting revived by the apprentice courtesan was omitted out of the pages in chapter 11, but is shown in the anime of episode 8 where she is facing Maomao while administering rescue breaths (chapter 11 instead cuts to the apprentice courtesan facing the opposite direction from Maomao and says "Oh good!" when the female victim coughs up the poison).
  • Maomao asks the courtesan that helped her to leave the evidence as is, pointing out that there might be poison. The courtesan then leaves the room to make tea.
  • Maomao reminds Luomen that refusing money means no rent for the Madam.
  • Maomao is shown noticing the kamuro heading to the sick customer's room, before deciding to follow.
  • The kamuro's older sister's fate is left implied.
  • The same kamuro is shown guiding the sick courtesan away from the window.
  • Maomao is shown bathing at the Verdigris House, with Meimei joining her. Meimei shares that everyone was worried when she disappeared.
  • Meimei asks Maomao if she has visited the annex, which she presumably does in the following scene.
  • Luomen says goodbye to Maomao when she sets off for the Verdigris House.
  • The Madam asks Maomao when she will next come back, presumably with more customers.
  • Jinshi is shown fidgeting in annoyance when Maomao enters the Jade Pavilion parlor.
