"The Threat" is the 4th episode of the The Apothecary Diaries anime adaptation.

Under direct orders from the Emperor himself, Maomao tries to care for an ailing Concubine Lihua, but finds her work impeded by Lihua's own ladies-in-waiting.

Maomao solved the mystery of the successive deaths of the Emperor's children, but Lady Lihua's condition continued to deteriorate. One day, the Emperor ordered Maomao to treat Lady Lihua. However, when she tried to feed Lady Lihua the food she had prepared for her, the maids got in the way, and Lady Lihua became weaker and weaker. Meanwhile, with the help of Jinshi, Maomao got the opportunity to get close to Lady Lihua, but for some reason, she used "face powder" which was supposed to be forbidden.^[1]

Summary[]

Maomao is appointed by the Emperor himself as a special attendant to the High Consort Lihua with the sole purpose of finding the disturbing truth behind Lihua's illness.

Changes[]

In the manga, the lady-in-waiting who continued applying the face powder to Lihua was dismissed for her mistake. Here in the anime, she seems to have been forgiven, and is seen continuing to work under the consort. The anime uses her continued employment to comedic effect, as Maomao likes to glare at her to remind her of her misdeeds.
