The Red Light District (花街, Hanamachi?), or the pleasure district, is a district located in the Royal Capital of Li. It is known for its abundance of brothels such as the Verdigris House. Although the district might appear as dazzling, one step into its back alleys reveals a world of lawlessness and danger. The red light district is also where Maomao and Luomen resided.
Overview[]
The red light district is located in the southern part of the capital,[1] past an ornate gate. Aside from the main street, many of the various denizens live on the edges of the district, including beggars and nightwalkers. Although the district is directly opposite of the Imperial Palace, it is still within walking distance.[2]
Traffic in the district is busiest at nighttime, while slow during midday.[2]
When a courtesan is bought out, a celebration is thrown for her, with other courtesans dancing for her send-off. This usually includes three days of feasts and dancing.[3] During Fengxian's send-off, the celebrations lasted a week.[4]
