The Northern Province (子北州, Shihoku-shu), also known as Shihoku Province, is major region of the Country of Li previously governed by the Shi Clan.
History[]
The Shi clan became the leaders of the Northern Province during the founding of Li. After they were exterminated, rule of the province was turned over to the Emperor, and their captured soldiers were put to agricultural work in the seized open lands.
Geography[]
The Northern Province is located north of the Central Province and contains several forests and mountain ranges, which contribute to its cool climate.[1] Snow falls in abundantly in the mountains of the northern part of the province, sometimes resulting in avalanches. There are also caves and hot springs.
Economy[]
The Northern Province produces timber, wheat, and sorghum. Leading up to the Shi clan rebellion, gunpowder and gun parts were produced. Sweet potatoes, in an initiative led by Lakou, began to be grown after the rebellion to increase the food supply.[2]
Culture[]
Hunting in the mountains is a popular pastime of the wealthy. Foot-binding is also a custom of the Northern Province.[3] The people of the hidden hot springs village worship Kosen, a fox deity of abundance, with an annual festival in autumn.[4]
