Anshi's lady-in-waiting Anime Ep32

Anshi's lady-in-waiting is a middle-aged woman who shows little emotion and was assigned to help Maomao investgate Anshi's "curse".

Background

Not much is known about her, but she seems to be trusted by the Dowager Empress.

The current Crown Prince of Li is the son of the current Emperor and Empress Gyokuyou, and the younger brother of princess Lingli. He is a minor character in The Apothecary Diaries.

Background

He was born to the Emperor and Empress Gyokuyou; for his and his mother's sake, the physician Luomen was brought back into the Inner Palace to assist with delivering the child at Maomao's suggestion.[2] In the light novel, he was born through a breech birth.

The former emperor's servant Anime Ep33

The former emperor's servant was a now elderly mute slave (probably a eunuch) who was the only servant the Former Emperor allowed to attend him when he painted.

Background

Not much is known about him, but his muteness may be due to his tongue being cut out to prevent him from revealing secrets easily.

Jin (静妃, Jinhi)[3] was a middle consort of the Inner Court. She is a minor character in The Apothecary Diaries.

Personality

Consort Jin had previously been known for her haughty personality, more than ready to flaunt her father's authority any time it suited her, but her illness seemed to subdue her, and she had become very withdrawn.[4]

Background

Jin was a middle consort of notable status, the daughter of a high official in the court.[5] She was thought to have been struck by a sudden illness a year prior to her death, but it was revealed that the sick "Jin" had actually not been her all along.[4]

The person posing as her was actually a court lady who very closely resembled her. While Jin had never managed to get the attention of the emperor, the court lady was courted by a government official, causing Jin's jealousy.[4]

In a fit of envy, the two women got into a fight that resulted in Jin's death. Her body was hidden underground to conceal the crime. Her ladies-in-waiting, who seemed to harbor some dislike for their mistress, chose to deceive everyone by hiding her death, partly out of self-preservation and empathy for the court lady. Feeling guilty for causing Jin's death, the court lady agreed to assume her identity by covering her face with bandages and pretending to suffer from the same red swelling and hair loss caused by a poisonous mushroom found in the inner court.[4]

As time passed and the court lady's marriage talks progressed, maintaining the façade became increasingly difficult. Fearing exposure, the ladies-in-waiting took matters into their own hands, leading to the events of the funeral.[4]

King of Shaoh[]

The King of Shaoh is one of the two pillars of the Country of Shaoh, alongside the Shrine Maiden of Shaoh. Normally, he has the most influence on political matters.[6]

Background

A previous King of Shaoh was a warmonger, who the previous oracle declared unfit to rule by “interpreting” the cries of the infant Shrine Maiden of Shaoh.[7]

The current King of Shaoh is younger than the shrine maiden, so the latter exerts more political influence than the former. When the King’s faction sought to undermine and depose the shrine maiden for being too powerful, she traveled to Li for medical treatment before they could uncover her secret.[8]

Lihua's first son[]

Lihua's first son Anime Ep1

Lihua's first son was the first child between current Emperor and Lihua who was born around the same time as then Lady Gyokuyou's daughter Lingli, but died of poisoning by white powder used as makeup.

Background

Around the time he was born a a poisonous white powder was being used by ladies of the Inner Court which, unbeknownst to them, was slowly poisoning both adults and children. Untreated, the adults might survive for an extended period of time, but the children, especially infants usually succumbed quickly. Maomao tried to leave surreptitious notes for the ladies-in-waiting of the Inner Court that the powder was poisonous, but Lady Lihua's servants ignored the warning.

Lishu's former lady-in-waiting is a woman who shows disdain for Lady Lishu, but is obsequious to Jinshi.

Background

Not much is known about her, but she lost her position to Kanan. Despite her affection for Jinshi and his awareness of it, he took a hairpin from her he deemed as inappropriate that Lishu had given her.

Lo-en Anime Ep36
Lo-en (Manga)

Lo-en is a high official on the finance board. Despite his position, Lo-en found himself involved in controversy when he was wrongfully accused of attempting to harm Jinshi. The accusation stemmed from the discovery of an arrow, belonging to Lo-en, embedded in a piece of Jinshi's robe. Lo-en denied any involvement or knowledge of the arrow, and it was later revealed that he was indeed not involved; the accusations were merely a bait to lure out the true culprit.[9]

Loulan's head lady-in-waiting (楼蘭妃の侍女頭) was a former head lady-in-waiting of high consort Loulan in the Inner Court. She is a minor character in The Apothecary Diaries.

Renpu (漣風 [れんぷう],[3] Renfū) was a former lady-in-waiting of high consort Loulan in the Inner Court. She is a minor character in The Apothecary Diaries.

Son (Anime)

Son (宗妃 [ソンヒ], Sōhi), also called Lady Sou,[1] was a low-ranking consort of the Inner Court. She is a minor character in The Apothecary Diaries.

Personality

She was known to have a great personality.

Background

She was from a wealthy family, but about two years before the funeral of Jin, she developed a strange disease that damaged her marriage prospects. However, she was allowed to remain in the Inner Court.

Suirei's Mother[]

Suirei's Mother was the first daughter of the Former Emperor born illegitimately, and the first wife of Shishou. She is a minor character in The Apothecary Diaries.

Background

She was born from the Former Emperor when he raped Shenmei's palace lady, who was just past ten years of age.[10] In order to hide the illegitimate birth, the crime was pinned on a court physician, and both the baby and the physician were banished from the Inner Palace; meanwhile, her mother the palace lady was shunned by Shenmei but forbidden from leaving the Inner Palace for the rest of her days.

As a result, she was raised as a simple town girl by her adoptive father the court physician. When she grew up, Shishou took her under his wing and made her his first wife.[11]

She was said to have died a natural death, but in reality was killed by Shenmei.[10]

Tao (Anime)

Tao was a lady-in-waiting of consort Jin in the Inner Court. She is a minor character in The Apothecary Diaries.

Personality

Background

Not much is known about her beyond that she closely resembled consort lady Jin and was suspected to have been regularly abused due to jealousy. At some point, after lady Jin's death, she was convince to pose as her to hide her death and preserve the status of her ladies-in-waiting. It was suspected to have been killed by other ladies in waiting after she decided to stop posing as Jin.

Unknown concubine

She's a concubine who has had at least one child die. We see her in episode one or volume one of the manga. She had a child after the current emperor's accession to the throne. And she probably had another child who also died. She's no longer a concubine.
