Maomao,[2] the Cat (
After it had wandered into the Inner Palace, Maomao took upon herself to look after it in the medical office, as the young Princess Lingli took interest in it. Later on the cat was named "Maomao" and was given the new official court rank "Admonisher of Thieves" by the Emperor himself.[2]
Appearance[]
She has a calico (three-colored) coat and blue eyes.
When she was found, Maomao was dirty and unkempt, which led to her namesake choosing not to let Princess Lingli touch her. However, some of her marking were already noticeable, and once she was old and strong enough to endure a bath, her fur was thoroughly cleaned.
Maomao wears a silk collar with a bell attached.
Personality[]
Maomao attaches herself to people she likes, causing them to constantly dote over her. She likes to chase mice.
Abilities[]
Hunting: Maomao is a born hunter, catching the rodents that try to get to the ingredients at the medical office. She caught her first mouse not long after being taken in.
Background[]
Princess Lingli heard Maomao (the cat) on her first walk outside of the Jade Pavilion. Chasing the kitten into a nook, Maomao (the human) found it in the hands of a palace woman. After she retrieved it from her, Maomao took the kitten to the medical office, where she and the quack doctor cleaned and fed it. Once the cat recovered, it was given the title of Admonisher of Thieves by the Emperor and named Maomao.[3]
While grabbing some alcohol and medicines for Gyokuyou, Maomao’s skirt was being torn by Maomao (the cat).[4] The cat was later found in a drunken state by Jinshi and Luomen with some catnip berries next to a tree, which hid Maomao’s note in a hollow.[5]
Maomao was brought out of the inner palace along with the quack doctor when he visited his village. She was given to the quack’s younger sister, who gave the cat a meal of fish and congee.[6]
Maomao was later included with a shipment of rice sent to the Verdigris House. The Madam soon put her to work catching mice and entertaining customers.[7]
Trivia[]
- Her name is written with the kanji for "hair" or "fur" (毛?), distinguishing her from her namesake, whose name is written with the kanji for "cat" (猫?). In Mandarin, the two names would be distinguished by tone (Maómaó and Maōmaō, respectively), although this distinction is lost in Japanese.
