The Ma Clan (馬の一族, Ma no Ichizoku^?) is a clan that directly serves the imperial family of Li as assistants, bodyguards, ladies-in-waiting, and wet nurses. Several members are supporting characters of The Apothecary Diaries.

History

The Ma clan has served the imperial family for many generations.

Gaoshun, who was born into the branch family, was adopted into the main family when their successor was disinherited. Taomei was engaged to the successor, but she married Gaoshun instead, despite being older. They began having children one year later, who became the Moon Prince's milk siblings: Maamei, Baryou and Basen. Taomei works as the de facto clan head, being responsible for running its day-to-day operations, and is training her daughter Maamei to to succeed her role, due to the men being liable to die at any time.

When Jinshi entered the Inner Court as its overseer at the age of 13, Gaoshun became his attendant, and in doing so abandoned his clan name and became a 'eunuch'. Once Jinshi returned to the outer court, Basen became his primary attendant and Gaoshun returned to serve the Emperor. Baryou and Maamei later joined Jinshi as assistants when his workload was too much. Prior to Jinshi's second trip to the Western Capital, Taomei and Chue - a member of the Mi clan who married Baryou - became his new ladies-in-waiting.
