It was first published in Japan on February 25, 2023. The translated digital English version was published on January 10, 2025.

The announcement of the The Apothecary Diaries anime series being in production for premiere in 2023 was confirmed with the release of this volume.

Maomao, Jinshi, and the others finally return to the royal capital to discover that life went on while they were away: Lahan is still working his abacus, Maamei is still pondering the future of both the Ma clan and her little brother Basen, and Yao and En'en are still pursuing their dreams (to become a doctor and to geek out over Yao, respectively). Maomao might have hoped that things would quiet down now that she no longer has to deal with locust swarms and succession crises, but it turns out things are livelier than ever as she reconnects with people and places she hasn’t seen in almost a year. Synopsis[]

After many months away, Jinshi, Maomao, and the rest of the western expedition finally return to the capitol (save for one unfortunate soul left behind). Lahan and Sanfan are waiting at the harbor to receive Lakan and bring him back to his estate.

The first piece of business waiting for everyone is an apparent suicide. A military officer is found hanging in Lakan's office and the without any time to rest the prodigies of the palace medical office are summoned to investigate. In short order the scene is shown to be the work of three new court ladies in trysts with the victim.

Meanwhile, for some months now Yao and En'en have been living at Lakan's villa as Lahan's (self-invited) guests, a state of affairs which annoys all involved except Yao. En'en and Sanfan both are concerned that the young mistress may have reasons to stay there that neither of them can idly accept.

At the Verdigris House, life continues. Joka's intimations at noble ancestry have begun to attract inquiries, while Meimei's talent for strategy earns her the favor of the Emperor's Go Sage, who buys her contract.

Jinshi, for his part, is resolved to act on his feelings for Maomao, formally summoning her to visit him. Maomao comes prepared for all that might happen, but confronts the moon prince with a resolution of her own: that she will not abide anything that would make her a rival to Gyokuyou...
