Koku-u

Koku-u (黒羽 (コクウ) , Kokuu?) is a lady-in-waiting in the Jade Pavilion and a minor character in The Apothecary Diaries. She joined Gyokuyou prior to the Crown Prince's birth along with her older sister Haku-u and younger sister Seki-u. She aids in cleaning and cooking, along with the other ladies-in-waiting.

Appearance[]

The middle of three nearly identical sisters, Koku-u wears a black ribbon in her hair to differentiate her from Haku-u (white ribbon) and Seki-u (red ribbon). Maomao describes the sisters as having almond-shaped eyes and charcoal-drawn eyebrows.[2]

Personality[]

Maomao notes Koku-u as having the strongest of spirit out of the three sisters.[2] She is also protective of Gyokuyou, having gone as far as to read her letters and send back her hair stick as a threat.

Background[]

When Koku-u was four years old, the rebellion against the Yi Clan occurred. She was evacuated to the house of Gyokuyou's mother, along with her mother, sisters, and Rikuson, to hide from Gyoku-ou's supporters.

Koku-u later went with her sisters to become new ladies-in-waiting for Gyokuyou in the rear palace. At a garden party, she retrieved a hair stick of Gyokuyou's that had fallen into the soup pot, and returned it in order to send a threatening message to the Empress that there could be enemies around her.
