Jazgul (ジャズグル, Jazuguru?) is a minor character in The Apothecary Diaries series. She is a mute child under the service of the Shrine Maiden of Shaoh.

Appearance[]

Jazgul has fair skin and dark hair and eyes. She has red markings around her left eye, and wore Linese clothing while visiting the country.

Personality[]

Jazgul is quite energetic, communicating with body language and drawings in lieu of speaking.

Abilities[]

Prophecy: Jazgul can divine future events from her dreams, which she expresses through her drawings.

Background[]

Jazgul came from a family of poor farmers, who sold her into slavery when they had nothing left. She was then purchased by the Shrine Maiden of Shaoh to be a lady-in-waiting.

One year later, the Shrine Maiden traveled to the Country of Li to treat an illness, accompanied by her Oracle and Jazgul. On a shopping trip to purchase medicine for the Shrine Maiden, Jazgul and the Oracle were separated. Jazgul was stranded by a canal, and was surrounded by some children. Maomao, Yao, and En'en thought she was being bullied, but they were actually trying to help her because she seemed lost, but were unable to communicate with her. Jazgul eventually used drawings to describe her intention of finding a way back to the shop, and was reunited with the Oracle.

After the Shrine Maiden faked her death, she named Jazgul her successor to return to Shaoh and take up the position. According to the Shrine Maiden, people who are destined to be the Shrine Maiden are born lacking something, but have a special power in exchange. Jazgul cannot speak, but before even arriving in the Country of Li, she drew pictures that seemed to show Maomao. The day she was lost in town, she was extremely insistent on going off by herself, as if she knew she would meet someone important to her.

When she left, she asked that some a drawing be given to Maomao. It showed a line with everything above it scribbled in black.

Trivia[]

  • In-universe, her name means 'flower of spring'.[1] This is the same in the Kyrgyz language[2] (also spelled "Zhazgul"?) and is a popular name in the region.
