Gyokuen (玉袁 (ギョクエン) ?) is the father of Gyoku-ou and Gyokuyou and Governor of the Western Capital. As the father of the current Empress, he is a minor character in The Apothecary Diaries.

Appearance[]

Gyokuen is old enough to pass for Gyokuyou's grandfather, and has a kind look in his eyes.[1]

Personality[]

As a 'man of the wind', Gyokuen's main goal was to bring prosperity to the Western Capital. He used every advantage he could to expand his business and gain power, in both the Western and Central Provinces. Gyokuen was also kind and generous, having taken in several women and children into his family, and continuously lent to farmers. He preferred to free Windreader slaves he bought, instead of sending them to work in the coal mines as the Yi clan did.

Abilities[]

Business Acumen: Aside from being a successful merchant, Gyokuen took in several concubines to penetrate different market sectors. He also seized coal mining rights after becoming the governor of the Western Province.

Background[]

Gyokuen was formerly a member of the Yi clan, having left to become a merchant at the age of 15. At some point, he was engaged to Seibo, a member of the Windreader Tribe. After the Windreaders' destruction and Seibo's subsequent enslavement, Gyokuen purchased and freed Seibo from a Shaohnese merchant. However, she had been impregnated by that merchant, and soon gave birth to a son, whom Gyokuen promised to raise as his own.

Gyokuen was able to expand his business, by taking in capable single women who were pregnant or had young children as concubines. He would raise the children as his own, and in turn his concubines would teach their respective child their trade. Before long, he became involved in several different market sectors, including textiles, pottery, and winemaking.

17 years prior to a major locust plague, Gyokuen rescued a young Rikuson, an Yi clan member whose family had been killed in a revolt instigated by Gyoku-ou. Along with taking Rikuson to the Imperial Capital, he also was named the new governor of the Western Province.
