The country of Anan (亜南) is a minor setting in The Apothecary Diaries. It is a vassal nation of the Country of Li.
Geography[]
Anan is located south of Li[1] and has a warm climate.[2] It is a stop on the sea route from the Royal Capital to the Western Capital.
History[]
Anan has been a vassal nation of Li for over a century. Its original name is unknown, as a previous emperor of Li renamed the nation.[1] Currently, it is led by a king.
Princess Fuyou, the third princess of Anan, was sent to the rear palace but failed to gain the Emperor's attention. After being given to a military official, she returned to Anan, and was replaced by the King of Anan's niece in the rear palace.[3]
Economy[]
Anan produces seafood, coral, fruits, and bar soap. Palm trees are also grown for their fruit and leaves.[4]
Culture[]
The Ananese speak the same language as Linese people, but with a distinct accent. Skin tones range from ivory to honey-colored, and hair tends to be curly.[2] As a result of the country's name, the Linese people tend to look down on Ananese people, and in turn the latter dislikes the former.
For less formal banquets, hosts and guests sit on cushions with food served on top of a carpet. Music is also lighter and more cheerful.[2]
